For Lisa Beckwith, improvement in healthcare has always been rooted in purpose. As a pharmacy manager early in her career, she experienced firsthand how systems can either support or fail both patients and caregivers. During this time, she became involved in the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI), where she first learned the power of empowering the workforce through continuous improvement principles modeled after the Toyota Production System. That experience shaped not only how she approached her work, but why she does it.

Lisa has been with Value Capture for over 20 years, advising senior healthcare leaders across the country in building the cultural and operational systems that enable what we call habitual excellence. Her work centers on helping organizations create environments where safety, both for patients and workers, is the foundation for learning, engagement, and transformation.

A pivotal moment in Lisa’s early career continues to drive her to this day: a patient, harmed by a missing medication, kindly asked her to ensure no one else would have to suffer in the same way. Lisa took that request to heart and made a promise, to that patient and to herself to improve the systems upon which people rely. That promise continues to fuel her dedication to this work.

Lisa has supported healthcare teams in eliminating preventable harm, including hospital-acquired conditions such as central line infections. She believes that when leaders empower their people to identify problems, design better work, and continuously learn, they not only reduce harm, they unleash the full potential of their organizations.
What sets Value Capture apart, in Lisa’s view, is its commitment to the human aspects of improvement. While technical tools matter, she believes lasting transformation comes from trust, deep respect, and empowering people to lead change from where they are.

Lisa’s personal and professional values are deeply aligned with Value Capture’s mission, which was founded on respect for every individual. She often returns to a standard articulated by Paul O’Neill Sr. as a guidepost: “Begin with injury-free for workers and patients” and from there, pursue excellence in everything people do.

“Start with safety. Teach everyone to see and solve problems. When people are empowered to improve, excellence follows.”
