About the Session

Discover what getting to zero harm means and explore how getting to zero harm for patients and staff can be achieved by emphasizing the most fundamental aspect of Lean, actively showing respect for others.

Recognize how combining Continuous Improvement, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) and the four stages of Psychological Safety can promote health equity and improve patient and staff safety.

Discuss intentional approaches to create and develop equitable, psychologically and physically safe spaces for diverse healthcare staff and patients of underrepresented groups that benefit staff engagement and the overall patient experience.

A visionary leader and speaker, Deondra Wardelle specializes in empowering individuals and corporate groups through strategic visioning to achieve goals and sustain transformative change.

  Deondra launched On To the Next One Consulting, LLC, to serve as a strategic partner and cultural change agent. She works alongside clients to assess, prioritize and address operational challenges. Her services range from facilitating strategic planning workshops to Continuous Improvement training to coaching leaders on operationalizing diversity, equity inclusion and accessibility initiatives.

 Deondra’s vision is to help organizations and individuals overcome obstacles and achieve their grandest goals – one step at a time. This includes her passion project, the #RootCauseRacism® movement, a global initiative to end systemic racism and advance social justice through the application of Continuous Improvement methodologies and practices.  

Alan Wikler Psy.D.

Alan Wikler Psy.D.

Operational Excellence Consultant

Alan Wikler Psy.D. is a Clinical Psychologist and lean practitioner with a deep interest in healthcare quality, safety and improvement. He worked at the VA  New York Harbor System for 31 years, first as a clinician and administrator in their substance abuse program, then as the Deputy Performance Improvement Manager, during which time he earned a Black Belt in Lean Performance Improvement, then created and ran the hospital’s Systems Redesign and Improvement Program until his retirement in 2022. He currently writes about healthcare performance improvement and patient safety, focusing on Psychological Safety in Healthcare.

Alan earned his Master of Arts (M.A) in Social Psychology at New York University and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from Yeshiva University.  He was a Clinical instructor in Psychiatry at New York University for over 25 years and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management at the NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, where he taught Continuous Performance Improvement for healthcare leaders.

Gerald Harris

Gerald is Vice President of Advisory Services and is responsible for Business Development at Value Capture LLC. With over 25 years of leadership experience, Gerald has successfully led large-scale lean transformations in various industries, including healthcare. He has worked with numerous clients to implement lean manufacturing and enterprise improvement principles, resulting in significant cost savings, increased productivity, and improved quality. Gerald is passionate about promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability in healthcare. He is excited to leverage his expertise to contribute to the #RootCauseRacism and Value Capture Zero Harm for Patients and Staff blog series.

Mark Graban

Mark Graban is the author of the award-winning book Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement. His most recent book is Measures of Success: React Less, Lead Better, Improve More.

He serves as a consultant through his company, Constancy, Inc and is also a Senior Advisor for the technology company KaiNexus. Mark hosts podcasts including “Lean Blog Interviews” and “My Favorite Mistake” – and his next book is about learning from mistakes, The Mistakes That Make Us: Cultivating a Culture of Learning and Innovation.

Education: B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University; M.S. in Mechanical Engineering and M.B.A. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Leaders for Global Operations Program.

Ken Segel

In this role as CEO, Ken provides support to CEOs of healthcare organizations dedicated to eliminating injuries and improving quality as a means to dramatically raise the clinical and financial performance of the entire institution. Prior to forming Value Capture, Mr. Segel served as the founding director of the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative (PRHI). PRHI achieved best-in-nation regional results in the elimination of several classes of risk for patients.
